Losing streaks are not a common occurrence for the ProBuild Lions. For the first time in years the Lions have lost three games in a row. Dozy Den Helder defeated ProBuild on their home court Saturday night by a score of 71-75.
Molly McDowell had 18 points, 8 steals and 7 rebounds. Belinda Bos followed with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Katie Bussey had 11 points.
For Den Helder, Maaike Klein scored 23 points and Randell van der Lee had 21 points on 5 three pointers.
“We are really out of form”, said Coach Laki Lakner after the game. “Our confidence is gone and all the players are playing far below their ability level. We hope that we will return to form during the final four but that is never certain. At this point I am not sure whether to practice really hard to take the week off to clear our heads.”
Den Helder took a quick 4-15 lead in the game and went on to a 21 point lead at the end of the first quarter, 9-30. On the offensive end of the floor the Lions played sloppy and defensively they offered little resistance for the hot shooting Den Helder team.
In the second quarter ProBuild was able to claw their way back into the game thanks to Belinda Bos. In the last minute of the quarter Bos scored to bring the score to 32-34 and this is as close as the Lions would come in the game. The halftime score was 36-41.
The second half began the same as the first. Den Helder was hot and ProBuild was not. Randel van der Lee began the half hitting three consecutive three pointers to extend the lead to 36-50.
In no time, the deficit was back to 21 points and the Lions had to fight their way back into the game once again. Molly McDowell tried to bring the team closer in the third quarter with some buckets and free throws. ProBuild was able to cut the lead to 13 at the end of the quarter, 48-61.
The Lions fought their way back to trail by only 4 points with 42 seconds to play after Bussey hit a jumper, but Den Helder extended the lead back to 6 points from the free throw line. Kim Hartman hit a jumper with 1.9 seconds on the clock to make it 71-74. The Lions were forced to foul and Janiek van Veen finished the game at the free throw line, 71-75.
ProBuild plays in the Final Four this weekend in Sporthal Zuid in Amsterdam. They play Friday night at 6:30 against De Wit Grasshoppers. The winner of this game will play the winner of CTO-Rotterdam on Saturday at 7.00 for the championship of the Final Four.
